In Whyalla you can experience a spectacular natural phenomenon with the annual migration of Giant Cuttlefish. This natural wonder attracts film crews, underwater photographers, divers, researchers and journalists every year from May to August. This amazing spectacle is unique to Whyalla.

The migration by these creatures to the waters of Whyalla is solely for the purpose of spawning. Every year between May and August, they come in their tens of thousands to mate and reproduce. In the process they create an amazing spectacle of cunning games, predation, underwater light shows and colourful kaleidoscopic displays.

If you are visiting Whyalla between May and August, make sure you check with our local visitor centre on how you can observe these amazing creatures.
